#lifelessons What I’ve come to realize is that #lifelessons

What I’ve come to realize is that there are two kinds of people in the world:

👉🏾 One that lives like no one owes him/her nothing

👉🏾 The other lives as if someone owes him/her something

One lives in gratitude the latter lives with a sense of entitlement.

While both potentially will work hard, the one with a sense of entitlement works with resentment and bitterness. The other sees that past experiences made them stronger and are grateful for what they are becoming as a result.

The grateful one will forgive but not forget while the other accuses constantly whenever he/she is emotionally triggered.

I’m not about to preach this morning.

Which are you?

BEHIND SCENES: I am not gonna lie, prepping for a BEHIND SCENES:

I am not gonna lie, prepping for a presentation is one of my happy places 😁

I am the student of what I’m about to present to my audience. I can know a subject but when preparing, I am become a student and this deepens the learning.

I love that God has given me the ability to help people regain momentum to advance their careers (depth) but also be able to apply what I know and help other audiences (breadth).

Recently, a VP asked in an interview, “how did you get to this place of passion and purpose?”

It’s been years of pausing, reflecting, journaling, looking within, learning, making mistakes, embracing those mistakes, having people in my corner with my best interest give candid feedback, tweaking, crying, doubting myself, regaining confidence, clarity, then not so clear again,

The point is the path to destiny is not straight. It’s squiggly 🤣

Be curious about the journey.

Know your WHY. Over the last week, we've seen a Know your WHY.

Over the last week, we've seen a more than qualified and Honorable Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson navigate with grace what we, as women and black women, face on a daily basis in the workplace (questioning our ability, experience, and value despite her qualifications).

My firstborn son was the driving force behind my motivation as a teen mother.

I'll confess that I didn't always get it right, but knowing that someone was looking over my shoulder gave me the motivation to keep going.

They're watching (your children, the future generation of leaders, and aspiring leaders).

Earlier in my career, I didn't know how to deal with microaggressions and toxic situations as a young professional black woman but my faith helped me to persevere. WHY kept me going in the face of adversity and now I get to do what I love with joy and make the choice to go where I’m celebrated rather than stay where I’m tolerated.

Know your why and revisit it often.

I am grateful and humbled by the women I get to wo I am grateful and humbled by the women I get to work with daily and some within my network I don't work with daily but I see you. These women are trailblazers, champions, change agents, and warriors who pave the way for all women and girls to live in a world where women's day is more than just a trend but where we are celebrated regularly. Keep going, I see you, and I am honored to know you.

Happy International Women's Day

(Sigh) 🤦🏾‍♀️ It’s annoying to no en (Sigh) 🤦🏾‍♀️

It’s annoying to no end a business or brand with little to no online presence.

Brand definition- simply put, your reputation.

Clients, vendors, decision makers, recruiters, hiring managers will look you up on line first before reaching out to you.

Sooooo, What we are NOT doing in 2022 is not having an updated and active online presence…and while you’re at it, your posts or what you put out there needs to be more than quotes and scriptures…mmmkay?

In the Career Reimagined program, I help female leaders and rising stars establish a brand that gets you noticed for the purpose of career growth, generate impact at scale, expand your influence, and maximize your purpose for a fulfilling career.

As a female leader, what is getting in the way of building or establishing your personal brand?

I spend my days talking to beautiful people who TA I spend my days talking to beautiful people who TALK about what their significant dreamwork is and have known it for years but have yet to take action to create it.

As a woman who had her first kid as a teenager and overcame challenges that would have made me a statistic (only around 2% of teen moms graduate college), I learned early on that what you desire in life requires intention and focus on getting it.

Remember in Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill calls this "definiteness of purpose" (read the book, excellent read)

Why do I share this, you ask? 👇🏾

Because some of us over-index on education because we lack confidence in our ability to influence, advocate for ourselves, and build relationships.

Let's discuss.

I grew up believing that you should not have relationships with people in upper leadership positions in organizations. Yet, it was my manager who advocated for my promotion and supported my goal to advance my career in workforce development.

After leaving the classroom in 2011, I took a small pay cut to return to corporate, and after a year, the company informed me that there was no money in the budget to increase my compensation. I was ready to walk, but with the support of my manager, I decided to advocate for myself. I did some salary research and lobbied for myself. That year, the outcome was an $8,000 increase. It may not sound like much, but that experience taught me a valuable lesson.

Learn how to influence in different situations to get what you want.

If you're not prioritizing relationships and growing your influence to do the work you've been put on this planet to do, you will get left behind.

The grave doesn't want your calling or your gifts.

👉🏾Take action
👉🏾Set goals
👉🏾Shoot your shot
👉🏾Grow personally and professionally
👉🏾Learn, practice, and grow
👉🏾 Pray and do the work

It’s not enough that you know the work you have It’s not enough that you know the work you have passion for doing.

The key to “overnight success” is development.

Becoming impactful requires your curiosity, learning, and development.

Passion alone does not lead to mastery. It will be your belief about your ability that leads to mastery.

Affirm today: I am confident that I will succeed in what I set to achieve because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I am enough.

You will experience failure on your way to greatne You will experience failure on your way to greatness. One of the best feeling in the world is doing the work you’re made for:

There were many failures before getting to this place.

We shun from failure because somewhere along the way, we adopt the notion that failure define us. So we hide and put on façades.

Failure is simply data on how to improve.

The quicker you get to this belief, you will stop fearing judgment of others, critiquing yourself so hard, and self-doubt.

Now, I understand that this is a journey that you have to be a willing participant because learning is vulnerable. You have to admit that you’re improving.

As I sit in rooms with decision makers and lean into what’s in front of me, because God did NOT give me a spirit of fear but of POWER, I lean in and open myself to learning and offering what I have to the best of my ability and effort. Not trying to prove anything.

Because,

What you seek is seeking you.

#Vulnerablepost moment Recently, I had a real li #Vulnerablepost moment

Recently, I had a real life moment of proving orientation vs. learning orientation.

Success (however defined for you) is more about your personal development and growth as it is about your career development.

After some evaluation last year as I reflected on the year, I became aware of something very interesting about myself. I have somehow adopted the need to control the outcome for everything and that has put me in a proving orientation.

Example of how proving can show up:

The need to respond to everything said to you is a proving orientation.

The need to always explain yourself is a proving orientation.

The need to work just to “prove them wrong” about your capabilities is a proving orientation.

Sometimes, you just need to be quiet and take it all in to gain insight.

Proving stops you from listening, being curious, and growing in areas that opens you up for greater leadership capacity.

An openness or willingness to learn creates curiosity and causes you to step back and reflect to see where the gaps are to improve.

Instead of proving, focus on improving.

Ask yourself a series of questions that helps you to get to the heart of why you’re in this proving state.

This takes deep self-awareness and self reflection.

Recently, someone said something to me that was untrue and immediately I wanted to react.

Truth needs no defense.

So, how do you make the switch from proving to improving? By getting very honest with yourself, opening yourself to learning, and disrupting the default (response) by making a different decision.

Despite how disempowering a situation may seem, you always have a choice. #teachersofinstagram #dreamjob #iquitteaching #careerchanger #careerchangecoach #careerchange #executivecoach #careercoach #personalgrowth
Let's talk about career alignment. The "feeling" Let's talk about career alignment.

The "feeling" that you are doing what you're supposed to do comes when what you do aligns with who you are and what excites you.

Career alignment has a few components:
It's work that aligns with who you are, your core values, your zone of genius, and what you're passionate about that drives your motivation.

How do I find this, you ask?

It will take deep self-awareness, self-reflection, intention, and focus on getting there.

It will also take a willingness to lean into learning and unpacking some things about you to get what you want. This journey takes curiosity.

Think about this and have a fantastic Thursday!

Where in your life are you allowing fear to hold y Where in your life are you allowing fear to hold you back?

It’s time to reflect, relax, and release!

In 2021, the answer, for me, to the question above was clear and doing something about it is what yielded the results I wanted.

What I know for sure is that success doesn’t happen my accident.

Being driven by a purpose that compels you to act will motivate you to achieve your biggest goals.

Activate courage to go deeper, take inspired action, and bet on yourself.

I’ll be teaching in a webinar a group of teachers how to discover the purpose that motivate you in your career next month. Send me a private message if you’re interested.

Happy Saturday!

Know Your Why! As I was looking to update my webs Know Your Why!

As I was looking to update my website this morning, I stopped to read my ‘About’ page (screenshot below) then a wave of memories of my upbringing came through as I read it. My heart got full thinking about what it took to get here.

Yesterday, I got some really good news about a contract that has been six months in the making. Next week, I will start facilitating career development virtual sessions to leaders of a giant tech company.

Many things made my heart full about this news but especially the process in the last six months is what I am in awe about. God’s hand was all in it.

The process= The vision, the people who I crossed paths with, the development, the mindset, the learnings, the persistence and determination, the “works” because faith without works is dead, and the times I wanted to default back to what is comfortable. It all came into play engaging the purpose.

One of the biggest lessons I have learned in this process is that your purpose-driven work takes identifying your WHY otherwise known as your purpose, focus, determination, conviction, and sacrifice.

Yesterday’s post was about your WHY.

Listen folks, identify your WHY.

What is the reason you want what you want?

If you don’t identify your WHY, you will easily abandon your goals because the reason isn’t compelling enough.

You won’t know what to say NO to. Heck, you won’t know what to say YES to which will cause you to miss growth opportunities to get to the next level (another story for another day).

When you have a working WHY or purpose, then allow your vision statement to be a reminder by reading it daily.

My vision statement: To be a teacher. Inspire and motivate women beyond what they think they could be.

What is your why?

PS. Oh and I coach teachers to transition from the classroom to corporate and my free Facebook for that community will launch end of January. See 👇🏾 for link to request to join.

Choosing the job you love is starts with uncoverin Choosing the job you love is starts with uncovering your WHY.

My career started in workforce development professionally as a Jobs Developer. When I started in the field, I found myself always having to talk to people and present information. I enjoyed work.

On a personal level, on a volunteer basis, I taught adult Sunday school class for four years and enjoyed that too.

It wasn’t until 2015 I became aware of my love for speaking in the form of teaching while teaching career services workshops.

It was this experience that led me to uncover my WHY and the reason I enjoyed doing the work.

Uncovering my WHY provided:

➡️ Clarity of my own values and alignment with what I do

➡️ Engage my passion for teaching more deeply and say yes to opportunities that stretches me

➡️ Commit to action and the right activities for development

When we understand the purpose, it motivates us to be intentional in everything we do.

I’ll post a video around around this next week.

I would love to hear how you have integrated your WHY into your personal or professional life.

How has your WHY impacted you finding the work you love?

I typically don’t post anything related to MLK d I typically don’t post anything related to MLK day because it’s usually a day I reflect on why he was killed.

This day is a reminder to me of WHY Dr. Martin Luther King was killed. He was killed for messages that made people uncomfortable.

“He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it,”

As you work meaningfully, just want to remind you that your job is not just a job. You are on assignment.

My primary word this year is commitment. I’m c My primary word this year is commitment.

I’m committed to stick to the hard until ease show up.

Too many times we give up on things we set our sights on because it’s hard.

When it’s hard we don’t believe that what we want is for us.

We believe we are not made for “it”.

Or we believe we will never “get it” because the process is hard.

But what I’ve learned, and I’ve had some GREAT coaches that has helped me see this, is the importance of remaining in the process of hard because learning is vulnerable but the outcome is far more valuable to our growth.

Admittedly, this has not always been the case for me until the last half of 2021. In the past, doing so was selective and one of the factors that influenced this was convenience.

Not anymore! Commit to the discomfort knowing that ease will emerge as we remain in the process.

What’s your 2022 word?
